It's definitely got a learning curve to it if you've been exclusively a Windows user. In my case I was a Windows user for 20 years before changing roles at work. I was handed a MacBook and said "what am I supposed to do with this." That said the creative aspects (digital media, video production, etcetera) are just awesome on a Mac. Both have their strong points really.

Yeah Plurk is really uninspiring to me. I don't quite understand what all the fuss is about - IM updates don't work and the interface is hideously not userfriendly.
I'm with you on microblogging services (Jaiku, Twitter, Plurk, etc). I want to decide on one and stick with it. Problem is when others won't follow. Eg if everyone decides to stick with Twitter despite it's downtime dramas we're kind of stuck. I'm still now sure what to do about that. You point about muli-posting services that send a single update to multiple services is interesting. Haven't really thought about that fully yet.
As far as Facebook goes, yeah I deactivated my account 2 years or more ago after hearing about how shocking their moderation procedures, usage policies, and support quality are. It was a protest at the time and I've never regretted it - especially after hearing of the Beacon debacle from the outside. What a mess!
MySpace I keep active only because I've got friends there who aren't anywhere else on the web. Most of the time I avoid it like the plague but I will occasionally give in and visit the site only to run away regretting it quickly thereafter LOL
I wonder what the character limit is on replies to updates? I've written an entire blog post here!
